Composting Scrap Produce

Composting grocery store scrap produce is very rewarding and will greatly enriches the soil in your garden, shrubbery beds and flower beds.  We use a simple and easy method of layering.  We never have to turn the compost and here in South Carolina it will decompose in just a few months.  We use leaves raked up in the fall and stored in plastic garbage bags, sprinkles of soil from our garden and grocery store scrap produce.  We never have to water our garden because the compost worked into the soil holds a lot of moisture.  We NEVER put any animal products in our bins.  If properly layered the  bins will not have any odor or pest except maybe the occasional fruit fly.  I must admit I have seen our resident mockingbirds diving in to get freshly dumped pieces of apple. These two birds live around our house year round and watch when we dump scraps into the bins.  As soon as we go back into the house we can look out the window and watch them dive in under the leaves to retrieve a piece of apple.  They usually just get apples, I’ve never seen them take anything else.  Very smart birds!
